direct tvFor many years, I worked nights at a newspaper. I went to work at 4 p.m. and didn’t get home till about 1 a.m. My days off were Sundays and Mondays. Needless to say, I was sleeping when most everyone else in the nation was working, and I was writing and editing when they were eating dinner and enjoying prime-time television. This arrangement meant that I was unable to chime in during discussions of “American Idol” or “Sex and the City.” I didn’t know anything about “The Biggest Loser,” but I did know all about the latest kitchen appliances being sold on late-night infomercials.

That all changed when I got DVR with my direct tv pa. In a very real way, the technology allowed me to enter the discussions being had by Americans far and wide, and it made my odd schedule much more manageable. I simply set the system to record the shows I had been missing and watched them in the mornings, when everyone else was at work.

Today, I can almost predict what Simon Cowell is going to say about performances before he says it, and I lust after Carrie Bradshaw’s Manolo Blahnik heels.
